FaceApp is a free mobile application for iOS and Android developed by the Russian company Wireless Lab that uses artificial intelligence to generate face transformations in highly realistic photographs. The app can transform a face to make it smile, look younger, look older or change sex, change hairstyle or hair color, add makeup and much more.

FaceApp launched on iOS in January 2017 and Android in February 2017. There are multiple options to manipulate the uploaded photo, such as editing options to add a print, makeup, smiles, hair colors, hairstyles, glasses, age or beard. Filters, lens blur, and backgrounds, along with overprints, tattoos, and vignettes are also part of the app.

In 2019, FaceApp drew criticism from both the press and social media about the privacy of user data. In response to questions, the company's founder Yaroslav Goncharov stated that user data and uploaded images were not transferred to Russia, but instead were processed on servers running on Google Cloud and Amazon web services. US Senator Chuck Schumer expressed "serious concerns about the protection of the data being added, as well as whether users are aware of who can access it," and asked the FBI to investigate the application.

Another controversy surrounding FaceApp is the "hot" transformation, available in the app in 2017 supposedly making its users appear more physically attractive. This was accused of racism for lightening the skin color of black people and making them look more European. The feature was briefly renamed "spark" before it was removed. Founder and CEO Yaroslav Goncharov apologized, describing the situation as "an unfortunate side effect of the underlying neural network caused by bias from the training set, not by intentional behavior" and announcing that a "complete solution" was being worked on " In August of that year, FaceApp once again faced criticism when it introduced "ethnicity filters" representing "White," "Black," "Asian," and "Indian." Filters were immediately removed from the app. However, FaceApp's gender change transformations have attracted particular interest from the LGBT and transgender communities, due to its ability to realistically simulate a person's appearance as the opposite gender.

Despite criticism, the app gained popularity again in 2019, reaching the peak of an Internet "challenge" where people post photos of themselves with the old filter. It often circulates on Facebook, gaining more and more followers over time. For the most part, people use it for fun and to briefly escape reality.

If you want to learn more about how this application works, we will explain it here. Faceapp's performance is very fast, it will take maybe a second to show you the results. You can use your phone's camera to take a selfie or use some photos from your gallery.

For people, the options will include some kind of different beard style. If you never sport a beard, you can pick the right one for you because with this app everyone will appear so real and at some point we will need a little courage to make changes to our looks.

But to be clear, let's say what you have when you download Faceapp free and open it. After choosing an image below the image, you will see the first category - Prints (which in general can make some changes to the whole face look) and when you click on this you will go to different avatars with ready made edits of your image.

The next category is the smile, which represents some expressions of the mouth, of course. Next up is Beards, as we say the above gentalments can shake up some hipster beard there. The following is Age: you can be sure it is the most fun.

The next step is Hair from where you can add some hairstyles. It also has Sizes that can manipulate some parts of the face like the nose or eyes, Glasses which is an attribute for your face, Hair Color, Morphing and last but not least, the categories are Makeup where ladies can spend enough time.

Users can also edit images with built-in tools and use filters, background images, and more.

The Russian app that caused a furor in 2019, is back in fashion. Everyone has used it, from celebrities to anonymous people, to change their gender, rejuvenate or even grow old and thus get an idea of what awaits them in the future. This application is based on neural network technology that gives us those real facial changes. But as it happened the first time, its use is accompanied by controversy over its privacy policy. The terms of use are not considered with users at all, the brand ensures that only the retouched photographs are stored in the cloud, that they are kept between 24 and 48 hours after editing and that they are treated locally. The problem appears in the data section it collects, although it is true that they are now more transparent in this regard, it has not limited their collection of information

Kaspersky senior analyst Fabio Assolini has pointed out the risks involved in using FaceApp. Although he has ensured that the app does not have any malicious component, it is necessary to be suspicious of the facial recognition technology used, since this sometimes serves as a password, and therefore take extreme precautions when sharing images with third parties. He assures that, 'the owner of the company could sell these photos to companies and this data could be easily used by cybercriminals to falsify our identity.' This reopens the debate on internet security and to what extent we are exposed without being aware of it. To avoid all these problems and continue using the application, the specialist recommends being very clear, exaggerating care and only downloading it from official sites. He recalled that it is very important to read the privacy policy to know what information you are requesting from us
